The Wagering Widow-Diane Gaston

Somewhere, I read that Diane Gaston was a regency author who wrote a different type of regency story. I had been getting burned out on the virginal spunky girl meets the mistunderstood bad guy. The first book I read was The Mysterious M. and I found it wonderful. I quickly ordered more books from Gaston and this is the second one. It is also a carryover from the first as Emily is the sister of the character in the Mysterious M.

Third in a series, Shamara is Jarek san Ranul (Nessa’s brother) and Eirene Kane’s story. Having met Jarek in both of the previous books, Shielder and Shadower I was looking forward to learning more about him.

As much as I enjoyed Shielder and Shadower, I cannot say this I liked this one as much. The sad thing is I just don’t know why. Both characters were strong and likeable, but it just didn’t click with me. I still would give it a solid B rating.

Second in a series, but actually the first in the timeline, Shadower is a story that I really like.

Having just finished Shielder, I immediately picked this up off of Mount To Be Read. For some reason I have trouble reading through whole series of books at one time. However after reading Shielder I couldn’t wait to get to Sabin and Moriahs story.

Moriah is a very beautiful women whose father was a shadower (a bounty hunter). A drunken neglectful father who gambled her and her sister Celie away when she was just 18 season old. She was given to Pax, another shadower who proceeded to rape and torture her.

The Shielder is first of this series, but seems to chronologically take place after the next one the Shadower.

Nessa dan Ranul had severe medical problems as a child which has left her alone and an outcast. The Shielder way of life is harsh and basically they live by survival of the fitest. Nessa’s brother had helped keep her alive and sane since she was cast out of her society when she was only 12.

A virus has been spreading throughout the colony and Nessa decides to volunteer to be a live host for the virus so that she may try to win back the respect of her family.
