In the previous book the Lockhart family bargins with neighbor and family enemy Payton Douglas to money to find the “beasty”. When Grif does not find the beasty, Payton asks for payment of his loan which was to be Mared’s hand in marriage. Payton has always loved Mared since they were children and figures this is the only way to get her hand. Mared does not want to pay of the debt and a heartbroken Payton forces into being his housekeeper.

He did not succeed so the second brother Griffin Lockhart had gone to London to find the “beastie”. The statue was last sold to Lady Battenkirk, who gave it to a friend.
